Rob Mills Sings Christmas Carols

Vox Music Academy's famous student famously tangoed with Paris in the afterglow of his time on Australian Idol eight years ago.

Now it's Carol keeping Rob "Millsy" Mills warm this Christmas. That's carol of the musical variety, namely singing them while co-hosting a festive version of Morning Melodies on Monday with stage star Marina Prior.

"It's a great tradition," Mills says.

"I love all things Christmas. I love Marina Prior and I love performing, and I get to do it on the great Arts Centre stage."

The two will perform several numbers before Mills busts out some of his favourite popular and old-school Christmas songs with the 40-piece Air Force Band.

"Coming from a band background, you have a bass player, guitarist, keyboardist and drummer and that's it. Even when I was doing Wicked there was only about 15 players in the pit, so playing with a 40-piece orchestra is something really special. I've played with a 20-piece band before and that was incredible. I'll be tearing up. Hope I'm OK."

Mills, 29, says carols are still an important Christmas tradition.

"Even though we don't have a winter wonderland here, nor will we see Frosty the Snowman outside our doors, it's still all the imagery of Christmas isn't it? If you think about it though, Santa should be wearing a singlet and boardshorts for us in the southern hemisphere."

The Sydney-based Melbourne boy will spend Christmas on the Mornington Peninsula with family, before enjoying the Boxing Day Test at the MCG. Then it's back north and back to work fronting a rebooted Young Talent Time for Channel 10.

"Some of the kids auditioning are 15 and have had 10 years' experience already," Mills says. "I had three years at 21 (on Idol) so it's incredible. These kids are little super stars."

Mills’s New Year’s resolution? "Learn more guitar. I'm getting better, but slowly."
